What is Cardioversion?
The use of the defibrillator to terminate arrhythmias other than V-Fib
How does cardioversion differ from defibrillation?
The current is synchronized with the ECG so that it will not be delivered during the vulnerable period (on top of the T wave).
How does the R on T phenomenon work?
When the defibrillator fires at the top of the T wave. This usually results in the rhythm changing to V-Fib.
What is emergency cardioversion used for?
Usually reserved for rapid ventricular and supraventricular rhythms associated with severely compromised cardiac output.
What is transcutaneous cardiac pacing?
Artificial pacemakers whereby a small electric charge is passed through a patients skin and across the heart between one externally pad and another.
How is the TCP set?
The pacer is set for a specific rate and the energy is increased until the heart just begins to respond to the stimulus.
What is this called?
The phenomenon is called capture and is associated with the depolarization of the ventricles which appears as a wide QRS complex with a corresponding pulse.
What are Pneumatic CPR devices?
Started out with a piston that compressed chest. Modified to include a suction cup to aid with recoil and now have moved to vest type garments which compress in more specific places.
