3 types of reading

Dominant reading- audience will read the way the author intended

Negotiated reading- partly believes the code and broadly accepts the reading but sometimes modifies it in a way which reflects their own experiences

Oppositional reading- the reading social position places them in an oppositional relation to the dominant code. They reject reading.

For feminists it can be thought of in 3 ways:
1. How men look at women.
2. How men look at themselves.
3. How women look at other women

Theory of equilibrium-
1. A state of equilibrium (all that it should be)
2. A disruption of that order (by an event)
3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred.
4. An attempt to repair the damage (of the disruption)
5. A return or restoration of a new equilibrium.

Todorov argues that narrative involves a transformation, the characters or situation are transformed through the process.
