State Haviguhurst's theory of growth and development.
Learning is a basic to life and continues througout life. He proposed the idea of developmental tasks which he defined as tasks which arise at or about a certain period in ones life, successful achievement of which leads to happiness and to success with later tasks, while failure leads to a persons unhappiness, disapproval by society and difficulty with later tasks.
Pecks theory of Development
Suggested that even though physical abilities may decrease with old age, mental and social capacities tend to increase during the later part of ones life. Took Eriksons last two stages which include the last 40-50 years of ones life and subdivided them into 7 seperate stages that describe the middle and older adult years.
Roger Gould
Reaserched adult development. Central theme of adulthood is transformation; adults continue to change throughout the adult years. Defined seven stages of adult development
Disengagment theory
Aging involves mutual withdrawl between elderley individuals and others in their environment, which in turn relives some of societys pressures on the older person.
Acttivity theory
Best way to go through the aging process is to stay physically and mentally active
Continuity Theory
Individuals retain their habits, behaviors and values in their old age. Those who want to continue to be involved will be, and those who prefer not to be involved will begin to disengage.
Jean Piagets theory of cognitive development
Renowend for his work which proposes that cognitie development is an orderley, sequential process.
Assimilation
A person encounters and reacts to new situations by using mechansisms he already possesses.
Accommodation
A change which results in the ability to solve problems that were not able to be solved before.

The ability to handle the demands of the environment

According to Piaget, when is cognitive development complete?
Complete when one has mastered formal operations and that this mode of reasoning and thinking is used through adulthood, with only the content and stability changing.
Explain Lawrence Kohlbergs theory of moral development
Emphasis of this theory is on the reasons an indiviudal makes a decision and not on the morality of the individual. According to kohlberg moral development moves through 3 levels and 6 stages, which are not necessarily linked to any specific developmental stage b/c some people will go on to a higher level of moral development than others.
Explain J. Westerhoffs four stages of faith.
A way of being and behaving that is derived from the faith experinces children have with their parents and other significant individuals, that is gradually internalized and then brought into adulthood. This is the faith that guides everyones action. When patients are sick, it is this faith which provides strength and trust.
Explain Carol Gilligans theories
Theory proposes three levels and two transitions, each level progressing to a more complex understanding of relationships between self and others, each transiton leading to a critical evaluation of the conflict between selfishness and responsibility.
