Why is the covenant between Adam sometimes called the covenant of life?
life was promised as the reward of obedience.

Life is everywhere in the Scripture is connected to obedience.

C. Hodge ii, 118
Why is the covenant between Adam sometimes called the covenant of works?
works were the condition on which the promise (of life) was suspended and because it is thus distinguished from the new covenant which promises life on condition of faith.

C. Hodge ii, 118
Was life to be earned or maintained?
had Adam continued in holiness, he would have enjoyed that life which flows from the favor of God.

C. Hodge ii, 118
Was not eating of a certain tree the only command Adam was required to obey?
Not likely; however it was given simply to be the outward and visible test to determine whether Adam was willing to obey God in all things.

C. Hodge II, 119
Was perpetual and perfect obedience the condition of the covenant made with Adam?
"it seems reaonable in itself and plainly implied in the Scripture that all rational creatures have a definite period of probation. If faithful during that period they are confirmed in their integrity, and no longer exposed to the danger of apostasy.

Infers it from the angels who kept their first estate and those who did not.

C. Hodge ii, 120
Why was the penalty of disobedience more than mere dissolution of the body?
In the Scripture death (in reference to consequences of transgression) includes all penal evil.

In Genesis death was the opposite of all that was promised.

God's favor was forfeited - and God is the life of the soul.

nature of the penalty learned from its infliction (the whole account of Scripture)

Christ saves not only from the grave, but saves the soul from death.

C. Hodge ii, 120
Is the covenant of works still in force?
to say that men are still under that covenant, is to say that they are still on probation; that the race did not fall when Adam fell.

The fact is that the whole world lies in wickedness. Man is an apostate race.

C Hodge ii, 122
