Veda
Oldest Hindu text. Brought to India by the nomadic Aryans around 1500 B.C.E. The Veda's are hymns: songs of praise god/gods. The Veda's are polytheistic. Chief god in the Veda's is Indra (God of storm)
Upanishads

Ramayana
Epic poem from 400 BCE which tells the story of Rama. This poem gives examples of how to behave

Mahabharta
Longest Epic poem

Bhagavad Gita
A chapter in Mahabharta which tells the tale of Arjuna- who goes for a drive. His driver happens to be Krishna (the driver is an incarnation)
Krishna tells Arjuna that he must go to war because it is his dharma (duty).
Karma
all actions release energy which comes back at an appropriate time.
Atman
self/soul- "you don't have a soul, you are a soul, you HAVE a body" C.S. Lewis
Brahman
God/Divine: Liberation (Moksha) unites you one with Brahman (God)
Stages of Life
there are four stages of life which have different Dharma's (ever-changing duties):
Student Stage
Adult Stage
Grandparent/retirement stage
pilgrim stage- wandering ascetic
Samsara
Cycle of life and death in hinduism. The rituals within a life. Moksha is liberation from Samsara (ie union with the divine) Stepping outside of the circular notion of time and understanding it's workings
Puja
worship.
Hindus sometimes make alters where they worship.
during puja they might present offerings to the gods (fruit, flowers, incense)
Buddhism
Founder Siddhartha Gautama (the buddha) 563 b.c.e.
Siddhartha goes on a drive and sees 4 things:
-old wrinkled person
-disease
-corpse
-yogi (renounced worldly possessions)
Siddhartha realizes there is more to life than what he has experienced and renounces his lifestyle and begins 6 years of suffering. At 35 he realizes that suffering is not what life is about either. and becomes the Buddha under the Bodhi where he reached enlightenment.
