Aim

Criminals had a particular gene which could lead to criminal behaviour

Genes

Procedure

Blood samples from 30,000 men born in the 1940s.

Chromasomes abnormalities found - XXY, and XYY.

16 had XXY

12 had XXY

The men were interviewed about their backgrounds, criminal history and had intelligence tests. Personality tests were used to see if they displayed more agression than XY males.

Interviewing and researcher bias

Social worker - outside of the study.

Eliminated researcher bias.

Conclusion

Limited evidence for XYY males being more agressive than XXY males

They were more similar than different.

Strengths

Using an indipendant social worker (who had no knowledge of the study aim)

This would get rid of research bias.

•Used a lot of tests to measure the different aspects of the men's lives, personality an d background

Weaknesses

Small sample of men were used only 1 in 1000 males have xyy

•only 12 men were tested, we cannot be sure that xyy males have lower intelligence or increased agression. A small sample also means that the results cannot be generalised. This is made worse because xyy males are fairly average and can't be picked out of males easily, and they cannot be traced in families as is is not inherited.

• the only link of agression and xyy is correlation. Chromasome abnormalities may not have caused the agression at all, and there could be other caused for their agression.

•not all criminals are xyy

Not all xyy are criminals

We cannot he sure that it's the cause of agression.
