Comedy
A humorous play with an important theme in which the characters confront themselves and eachother with amusing results
Tragedy
a serious play with a topic of universal impact as its theme. The central character or characters confront suffering, decline, and often death.
Melodrama
An over-the-top play with a trivial theme in which the good always triumphs over the bad.
Farce
A sarcastic play with a trivial theme containing elements of burlesque and humor.
Tragicomedy
A tragic play which ends on a positive note.
Dark Comedy
A play that takes a serious theme and makes light of it. Often ends tragically or disturbingly.
History
Lengthy play of historical events, dealt with respectfully and honestly.
Documentary
A (generally) serious play based off of court trials and/or official records.
Musical
A play with an extensive musical score. Any genre of show can also be a musical.

An informative method of classifying a play.
