Who was David Garrick?
Considered the greatest actor of his age. He managed the Drury Lane Theatre for a bit, banished spectators from the stage, began to use historically accurate costume, and longer more intense rehearsal schedule.
Why did Germany take so long to develop a theatrical identity?
Germany wasn’t a united nation until later, it was made up of kingdoms and small provinces and therefore did not have a national identity all together.

What was the Hamburg Dramaturgy? Who wrote it and why is he significant?
Gotthold Lessing wrote the Hamburg Dramaturgy as a model of “what theatre should be”. Lessing is considered the father of German theatre and supported Shakespeare.
What was Strum und Drang?
Came from Romantics and means “Storm and Stress”, they were passionate radical literary movements in the 1770’s, then wrote plays. “Heroes are men of action”. No precise form or style. In defiance of neo-classical rules, Shakespeare.

How did theatre structures change in the 19th C.?
Iron and steel replaced brick and wood, therefore theatre structures were much more stable. Elevator in theatre, theatres becoming slowly more modern and contemporary, but costs sometimes limited theatre owners.
