Stage manager

The director's technical liaison backstage during rehearsals and performance

Actor

A person who's profession is acting on stage

Technical Director

Usually a senior technical person within a theatrical company. This person usually possesses the highest level of skill within a specific technical field.

Sound/lighting engineer

Set up and operate audio and video equipment including microphones, sound speakers, connecting cables and wires, and related electronic equipment for the play

Stagehand

Person who works behind the scenes of a play. Their work includes setting up the scenery, lights, sounds, props, rigging, and special effects for a production

Prop manager

Person responsible for purchasing, acquiring and/or manufacturing any props needed for a production

Wings

The left and right side of the stage immediately outside the scenery, unseen by the audience

Apron

The acting area of the stage that extends beyond the proscenium arch

Proscenium Arch

The frame around a proscenium stage

Proscenium stage

A performance space in which the audience views the action through a picture frame

Profile

A scenic element cut from a large sheet of plywood and attached to a flat using keystone

Flat

A set piece consisting of a light weight frame, covered with canvas, muslin or wood.

Fly space

The area above a stage where lights, drops, and scenery may be suspended on wire ropes

Flood lights

A large, powerful light, typically one of several used to illuminate a stage.

Gel

A thin piece of colored plastic, available in a wide array of colors, that can be cut and fitted to a light to color the beam directed onto stage.

Gobo

A thin metal template with a pattern punched out attached to a lighting instrument to create patterned or textured lighting effect.

House

The auditorium, or the area where the audience sits

Lighting plot

A plan, usually drawn to scale, showing the placement of lighting instruments.

Makeup plan

A form on which you can record your make up design decision

Drop

A large canvas curtain that hangs at the back of the stage setting

Thrust stage

A combination of the proscenium and the area stages, with the audience sitting on two or three sides of the acting area

Arena stage

A performance space in which the audience sits all around the stage

Box set

A feature of realistic theatre,a two or three walled set representing the interior of of a room

3 point lighting technique

•The key light- this is the main light used on your subject


•The fill light- the purpose of this light is to fill in the shadows created by the key light


•The back light - this is used to separate subject from background
