Speakability- "a line of dialogue should be written so it achieves maximum impact when spoken" words spoken by actors make sense for their characters.
Stageability- dialogue, action, and setting able to be put together in a way that we'll care about and believe the story
Flow- the tempo, how it moves from event to event
Truth
Richness- a depth in detail and dimension that propels us into a world and makes us want to stay, feels real, & complete.
Depth of characterization- characters must be real people with all the complexities that entails
Theme
Gravity- Reflect something deep about the human condition; love, loss, ambition, insecurity/fear
Pertinence-relevance of the theme of a play to its audience
Tightness
Compression- getting the point across in a limited amount of time
Financial: limiting sets, props, characters, etc.

Born in Manhattan, raised in Lake Charles, LA, returned to New York for College. MFA in Directing (not Playwriting) from NYU.
David Henry Hwang
From LA. First few plays were semi-autobiographical drawing on his Asian American heritage. They got the notice of Joe Papp of the Public Theatre in New York. He produced Hwang's first 4 plays. M. Butterfly won him many awards and accolades. His work with the Disney corporation has insured that he will be able to write for a long time.

Neil Labute
Born in Wayne, MI, raised in Spokane, WA, Graduate of Brigham Young University where he became a Mormon. After Bash: Latter Day Plays he left the church. Has spilt his career between theatre and film directing and screenwriting.
Suzan-Lori Parks
Born in Fort Knox, KY, raised in part in Germany where she attended some High School.
Finished High School at the John Carrol Schooll in Bel Air, MD. Graduated from Mount Holyoke College in MA. She was awarded a “Genius Grant” by the MacArthur Foundation in 2001.
