Underlying Unity

The general assumption of the Yijing that reality is ultimately unified insofar as the things making up reality are interrelated.

Continuous but Ordered Change

Another general assumption of the Yijing that reality is continuously changing in an orderly manner.

Constancy in Change

Behind change, there are certain -- perhaps abstract -- contsants that do not change. These constants include:

1) The fact that things are changing is a constant.

2) The patterns of change are constant.

3) The things changing are constant.

4) Orientation of above and below.

5) The rules and laws by which the natural world changes and the fact that these rules provide benefits to the living world are constant.

6) The system of human virtues are constant.

7) There is a constant tendency toward equilibrium of opposites.

The Hillside

Yang = Sunny side of the hill.

Yin = Shady side of the hill.

The fact that the sunny side changes as the day progresses suggests that the same thing (the hill) is constantly changing from one extremity to the other. It suggests change, unity, and difference in one and the same thing.

It suggests that the same thing is made up of opposite but complimentary and dynamic features.

- The oppoistes are complimentary because together they give a complete account of what somehting is.

- The opposites are dynamic because the dominance of one or the other is constantly changing.

Qi (Pronounced "Chee")

A basic fundamental energy-stuff; the most fundamental stuff that makes up reality; the basic life-energy of reality.

Yin and Yang are the manifestations of Qi into polar opposites:

Yin:

-Dark

-Soft

-Passive

-Cool

-Feminine

Yang:

-Light

-Hard

-Agressive

-Hot

-Masculine
