In the Wife of Bath it is a very patriarchal social structure where women were not given grant to own any property or money and were deemed their husbands property. The White Devil was slightly later, so women had more freedom to reign but were still very much living with suppressed views and were expected to stay home and were not allowed to divorce their husbands.

How were women seen by men in the 15th century?

Very physical beings, led by passion and their body rather than intellect. Men were deemed superior, with mind and reason. Women are depicted as beasts in the White Devil referred to as 'hounds' and various other animals.
