What does validity of diagnosis mean?

The extent to which a diagnosis reflects an actual disorder and therefore enables suitable treatment.

If individuals with the same diagnosis display different symptoms and respond differently to treatment, it indicates low validity of the diagnosis.

What can cause low validity of diagnosis?

Mental health disorders must be operationalised so they can be defined in the systems, however, this loses validity.

Changes in content leads to low validity of some diagnoses.

Co-morbidity is hard to diagnose as it relies on choosing the best fit diagnosis, losing validity.

What did Rosenhan find when using the DSM-II for schizophrenia?

7 out of 8 patients received a diagnosis of schizophrenia, as a result of reporting auditory hallucinations of "empty, hollow thud". This shows low validity as they didn't really have a disorder.

What did Kim-Cohen et al find when using the DSM-IV for conduct disorder?

Those with conduct disorder were more likely to describe themselves as antisocial and were more disruptive in observations - high concurrent validity.

Those with conduct disorder aged 5 were more likely to have behavioural and educational difficulties aged 7 - high predictive validity.

What did Jansson et al 2002 find when using the DSM-IV and ICD-10 for schizophrenia and psychosis?

The ICD and DSM had a diagnostic agreement of 0.82 , showing high concurrent validity of schizophrenia/psychosis diagnosis when using the ICD and DSM.
