Industry, Agriculture, Economically, Employment


Industry (for Mass Production); more imports, so more production, Agricultural; farms benefited, becoming the Worlds' main Supplier. Economically, helped USA become a more powerful country. It gave Employment for nearly everyone, it gave workers good wages and good working hours. Many countries owed the USA millions after the war like Britain and France for example.

Laissez Faire


It is the idea that the government doesn't get involved in peoples businesses or provide welfare and social care for them. People are more independent.


For example Laissez faire led to problems after the war because work wasn't need as much because resources and materials weren't need abroad. This lead to unemployment, discontent workers with more working hours and/or lower wages and many strikes.

America didn't want 'their boys' to fight, get involved in European politics, or wars again. Woodrow Wilson wanted the Fourteen Point Plan,to make more peace with Germany. Wilson also wanted the League of Nations so that all the countries of the world can talk about their problems (Even though USA never joined because they wanted to be isolated, hypocrites). The US government made 4 Acts/ Tariffs.

Emergency Tariff Act, May 1921 - increased import taxes.


Budget and Accounting Act, June 1921 - put controls on government spending.


Revenue Act, November 1921 - cut individual tax and the wartime tax on high levels of profit. On the other hand it put a rise on taxes paid by businesses in 1922.


Fordney and McCumber Tariff Act, September 1922 - It raised tariffs, and gave the President the power to raise the tariffs annually.

Advantages - It encouraged Americans to buy American goods.


Disadvantages - They did not help US exports. Lots of countries retaliated by making tariffs of their own. Therefore Us exports became more expensive and so less popular.
