produces urine and helps body fluid

one from each kidney transport urine to the bladder
Urinary bladder
serves as a reservoir for urine

urinary analysis
Urinalysis
An examination of urine to determine the presence of abnormal elements that may indicate various pathological conditions. It involves the physical, chemical and microscope examination
Freshly voided
into a clean, dry container
Clean Catch
a procedure where in females, the labia are washed with soap and water or a mild antibacterial agent, dried and the specimen is collected (by voiding) in a sterile container, males wash similar manner
Catheteriztion
After cleansing in above manner, a sterile catheter is passed into the urinary bladder and the urine is collected for specimen in a sterile container. The catheter is inserted apprx. 5 inches for female n 12-13 males
Urinary Output?
1,000-1,500ml/day, 95% of urine is water
Diuretic
an agent that increases urine output, acts in two ways: by increasing glomerular filtration, by decreasing reabsorption from the tubules
Urinary Tract Infections
urinary tract infections with microorganisms.
S n S: dysuria, heaviness in lower abdomen in females 80% E.coli |
Cystoscopy
the visual examination of the urinary bladder by means of cystoscopse which is a hollow metal tube that is introduced into the bladder via the urinary meatus and is passed through the urethra into the bladder.
Rx-antibiotics |
Uremia
Toxic condition associated with renal insufficiency produced by the retention in the blood of nitrogenous substances normally excreted by the kidneys
Rx-dialysis |
Dialysis
waster material such as urea are separated from the bloodstream when the kidneys no longer function.
Two Types of Dialysis
1. hemodialysis uses the artificial kidney machine that recieves wastefilled blood from the patient's bloodstream, filter is, and returns the dialysed blood to the patients body
Other type of dialysis
2. peritoneal dialysis using a peritoneal catheter, fluid is introduced into the peritoneal cavity. The fluid causes wastes in the capillaries of the peritoneum to pass out of the bloodstream and into the fluid. Fluid with wastes is then removed by catheter
Renal Transplantation
a kidney is transplanted into a patient with renal failure from an identical twin (isograft) or other individual (allograft). Best results occur when the donor is closely related to the recipient, and better than 90% of the kidney's survive for 1 year or longer
Nephrolithiaisis
kidney stones, usually composed of uric acid or calcium salts. removed by lithotripsy (physical force or shock waves) lithotomy (incision of a duct or organ) stent (cylindrical device that is inserted into the ureter widening the lumen
Pyelolithotomy
removal of calculi from kidney pelvis
Ureterolithotomy
removal of calculi from ureter
Renal hypertension
hypertension due to kidney disease
Glomerulonephritis
infammation of the kidney glomerulus often follows acute infections
