Word choice- "Pickaninnies"
-Interesting word choice is used to describe children. -The word pickaninnies was used to refer to back children. The inspector would never have used this terminology to refer to the children of a white person. Metaphor- "flock of pickaninnies" -In this metaphor the inspector is comparing Marians children to a flock of sheep. However Marian actually has no children. He is therefore suggesting tat because she is black she should have many children Word choice- "Not quite steady" -Marian's voice is described as being not quite steady. This tells us that the inspectors racial abuse is beginning to upset Marian. |
