Word choice- "Pickaninnies"
-Interesting word choice is used to describe children.
-The word pickaninnies was used to refer to back children.The inspector would never have used this terminology to refer to the children of a white person.
Metaphor- "flock of pickaninnies"
-In this metaphor the inspector is comparing Marians children to a flock of sheep.However Marian actually has no children.He is therefore suggesting tat because she is black she should have many children
Word choice- "Not quite steady"
-Marian's voice is described as being not quite steady. This tells us that the inspectors racial abuse is beginning to upset Marian.
"Damn you!"
Word choice- "Damn you!"
-Interesting and shocking word choice is used when Marian says "Damn you!".This reveals that Marian has finally reacted to the inspectors racial abuse causing her to fail.

-The exclamation mark highlights Marian's outrage at the inspectors racist comments. Finally she is no longer calm and in-control.
