is an alphabet with a certain design
how is a font made?
the designer will deside to start with Serif or sans-serif, organic or abstract.
then they draw out the font
next they will digitize the core letters because those letters shapes often repeat
then they use an application like font lab to create the font file.
What is a font file?
fonts are actual computer files that hold algorithms or sets of computer instructions which are processed for printing. Rasterization is the conversion of vector information into the dots or pixels used to actually print or display the font. This raster data requires a high resolution (1200 dpi +)
What are the 2 types of font formats?
1. Bitmapped Fonts
2. Outline fonts
what is a bitmap font?
Made up of pixels or bits and is resolution dependent with very poor display. A set of dot patterns for each letter and digit in a particular typeface. The bitmapped font takes up disk space for each point size.
what is an outline font?
Outline fonts are made up of vector outlines and are resolution independent. they use width tables that tell the computer how wide the letters should be as a result of their point size. and they use kerning tables which list how the letter pairs should combine.
what are the 3 predominately used font formats?
Postscript (PS) Type 1
True type
open type
what is a postscript font?
Introduced in 1985 as the fist WYSIWYG font.PS has a screen font and a printer font. This font is the most reliable because all printers use the PS language. Some problems with PS fonts: on screen can appear jagged and the face prints ok: your screen font is missing. an other problem is that your on- screen image is ok but the printed font is missing OR the output device has substituted something else: you outline (printer) font is missing.
What is a True type font?
True type was introduced in 1990 these fonts were made by Microsoft and apple so that they could run their OS systems without Adobe. True Type fonts consist of the font file and a rasterizer. The font format is inexpensive and the TT faces became widely available as shareware and freeware. Major problem: since almost all RIP's use PostScript language, TT font have output problems.
What is Open type fonts?
Open type are the new replacement for Postscript fonts. they are cross platform compatible. They are single font files containing all information about the font. They can be simplified in a font management program, the file sizes are smaller and are able to hold 100's or glyphs.
what is a .DFONT?
.DFONTS are the systems fonts that should not be deleted. it stands for Data Fork TrueType. Originally on Mac TT fonts were stored in Forks: data and resources but apple reduced this to only data.To not have to re-purchase the system fonts due to licenses they moved the Resource fork to a data file.
what are the levels of font?
- System fonts
- User fonts
-application fonts
what can a computer not run without?
Fonts
Since large number of fonts can slow down an OS what can you do to help manage the situation?
Use Font management software such as FontBook, Linotype Font Explorer, Exensis Suitcase.
What are 8 things that font management software help you with?
1. preview fonts
2. install fonts
3. turn groups on fonts on or off
4. resolve duplicated fonts
5. warn you when you have a missing or corrupted font
6. fix font files that have been corrupted
7. manage the location of fonts
8. organize font folders.
what are the 2 main issues with fonts?
Font Replacements
legal issues
What happens when a font goes missing or is corrupted?
The system will try to display one without changing the line endings.
if there is no equivalent he font will print in Courier.
Which out of the 3 fonts will font replacements not occur?
Open true type because it is cross platform.
Since Mac True type font is different then Windows truetype font will this bring up reflow issues?
No, because the characters and widths are the same. this way people can trade files back and forth. However not al the fonts will look the sam e.
what happens when specific glyphs in a font don't exist in the replacement font?
you will get a substitution.
what is ASCII and what is it used for
american standard code for information exchange. it is the codes for each glyph, and supports 127 characters.
How can one avoid font replacements?
By making a PDF. PDF's embed fonts. when you embed a font it will ensure you that the file is viewed properly on other computers. However this increase the file size as well as some font vendors don't allow this because they don't want people to extract the font and use it for free.
what happens when you embed a SUBSET of fonts?
wil only include the characters that you used in your file.
From the End User Licence Agreements (EULA) what are the 3 licenses restrictions?
1. the number of copies you can make
2. the number of people who can use it
3. the number of printers the font can be used on.
