Conduction, neural integration, Locomotion, reflexes.

Four principal functions of the spinal cord

Conduction

Bundles of nerve fibers that conduct information up and down the cord connecting different levels of the trunk with each other and with the brain.

Neural integration

Pools of spinal neurons receive input from multiple sources, integrate the information, and execute an appropriate output.

Locomotion

Walking involves repetitive, coordinated contractions of several muscle groups in the limbs.

Spinal cord

A cylinder of nervous tissue that arises from the brainstem at The foramen Magnum of the skull

Meninges

The spinal cord and brain are enclosed in three fibrous membranes called

Dural sheath

The dura mater forms a loose-fitting sleeve around the spinal cord

31

Number of pairs of spinal nerves

Epidural space

The Space Between the sheath and vertebral bone. Is occupied by blood vessels, adipose tissue, and loose connective tissue.

Arachnoid Mater

Consist of five or six layers of squamous to cuboidal cells adhering to the inside of the dura.

Subarachnoid space

A gap spanning between the arachnoid Mater and the Pia Mater. Is filled with cerebrospinal fluid.

Lumbar cistern

The subarachnoid space inferior to the medulla cone. Is occupied by the cauda equina and CSF

Pia Mater

A delicate, transparent membrane composed of one or two layers of squamous to keep oil cells and delicate collagenous and elastic fibers

Coccygeal ligament

At the level of vertebrae S2 the fusion of the dura mater and Pia Mater the anchors the cord and meninges to vertebrae co1

Anterior median fissure

A longitudinal groove on the ventral surface of the spinal cord

Posterior median sulcus

The longitudinal groove on the dorsal surface of the spinal cord

Medullary cone

The end of the spinal cord located at L1

Gray matter

Contains the Somas, dendrites, and proximal parts of the axons of neurons. This site of synaptic contact between euron's, and therefore the site of all neural integration in the spinal cord

White matter

Contains an abundance of myelin. Is composed of bundles of axons that carries signals from one level of the CNS to another

Central canal

In the spinal cord, is lined with ependymal cells and contains cerebrospinal fluid

Funiculi

Bundles arranged in three pairs hyphen a posterior, lateral, and anterior column on each side

Ascending tract

Carry sensory information up the cord

Descending tract

Conduct motor impulses down

Grey commissure

Connects the left and right side of the grey matter in the spinal cord

Somatic motor

Neurons in the anterior horns of the spinal cord
