What are the different functions of the skeleton?

●Support and Shape- ridged bone frame. Supports skin and muscles.


●Movement- muscles move bones at joints. Good for sport.


●Protection- protect vital organs.


●Making blood cells- atheletes perform better- more oxygen.


●Mineral storage- calcium and phosphorus- help with none strength- needed for muscle contraction.

Types Of Bone

●Long bones- e.g. humerous- stong and assist muscles in movement.


●Short bones- e.g. tarsals- support weight of body (weight-bearing).


●Flat bones- e.g. ribs- protect internal organs- muscles attatchment.


●Irregular Bones- e.g. vertebrae- protection and muscle attachment.

Joints of Movement.

●Flexion-closing a joint.


●Extension-opening a joint.


●Adduction- moving towards the centre line. E.g. swinging a golf club.


●Abduction-moving away the centre line. E.g. taking back a tennis racket before swinging it.


●Rotation-clockwise or anti-clockwise movement.


●Circumduction-movement of a limb, hand or foot in a circular motion.


●Plantar-Flexion- extension at the ankle.


●Dorsi-Flexion- Flexion at the ankle.
