What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of chemicals, their properties, and the reactions in which they are involved.
Atom
The smallest unit of an element that maintains properties of that element.
Molecule
Smallest unit of a substance that maintains chemical and physical properties of that substance. Can consists of one or more atoms.
Heterogeneous
Composed of dissimilar components. eg. salad
Pure Substance
A sample of matter that has definite chemical and physical properties.
Compounds
Joined by chemical bonds. eg. carbon dioxide (mixture of carbon and oxygen chemically joined)
Mixture
Combination of substances that are not chemically combined. eg. gold (cause it's usually not pure; normally mixed with some other metal)
Density
The ratio of Mass to Volume
D= m/V Density is expressed as grams/^3cm for and grams/liter for gases. |
Homogeneous
Uniform structure or composition. eg. air (mixture is not recognizable)
