Uniformitarianism
A principle that states the earths change is gradual and has happened the same way throughout history:created by James Hutton. "The present is the key to the past"
Catostrophsim
A principle that states that all geologic change on the earth occured because of a sudden event such as : a metorite or astroid, an earthquake, a volcanic eruption (rare sudden events)
Extra Info of Faults & Intrusions
Both are always younger than the layers that cut across because layers had to exist before the features could cut through them
Uniformitarianism vs. Catastrophsim
Catastrophism-Sudden and earth was only a few thousand years old
Uniforitarianism- Gradual change, earth was millinons older
Fault
A break in the Earth's crust along which blocks of the crust slide relative to one another
Geologic Column
The ideal sequence of rock layers tat contains all known fossils and rock formation on Earth arranged from oldest to youngest
Created: By geologist piecing together different rock sequences from all over the world
Uniforitarianism Wins!
Charels Lyell published 3 volumes of collection called: Principles of Geology- reintroduced uniformitarianism
Had losts of notes and successfully challenged catostrophism
Intrusion
Molten rock fro the Earth's interior that squeezes into existing rock and cools
Relative Dating
Determining weather an object or event is older or yonger than another object or event
Princple of Superposition
Princple that states younger rock lies above older rock in undisturbed sequences " Younger over older"
