Why did the US move towards a policy of isolationism?
-They did not want to be involved in foriegn affairs and lose men far away from their home country
-They believed the USA would have to bear to keep the peace
What were the effects of isolationism?
-They imposed heavy taxes on foriegn trade
-The imposed immigration restrictions, in favour of WASPS
-America's economy boomed due to an increase in trading within the country
How did Republican policies help the boom?
-Laissez-Faire: left busnissmen alone,
-Tariffs: encouraged American goods instead of foriegn
-Low Taxes: Lower taxes, more money spent
-Trusts: Kept one business to each field, cheaper
How did mass production help the boom?
-Produced goods quickly, meaning the more products there are, the cheaper they will be
-Wages for workers went up
How did Hire Purchase and Speculation help the boom?
-By investing in companies and believing the shares would continue going up

How did new technology and advertising help the boom?
-By making new deals and items more widespread, people were able to invest more
-By mailng shop catalogues people were made more aware of the new products
What impact did the development of radio and telephone have on the US?
-Widespread of jazz, brought in a new era of entertainment
-Created more work for electrictiy, factories, etc
-They were made cheap, so 'everyone' could afford them
How did the cinema change and develop during the 1920's?
-It introduced new film stars, Charlie Chaplin
-Silent movies slowly introduced 'talkies' putting silent stars out of business
-It was seen as the centre of entertainment and widespread movie stardom

How did the lifestyles of the rich and poor vary?
-Farmers were poor due to over-production
-Poor people were often immigrants, black people and farmers during the boom
-With electrictiy booming, coal and textile workers suffered
What restrictions on immigrations were put in place?
-1917 Immigration Act: take literacy tests
-1921 Immigration Quota Act: limit to 370,000. Limited to 3% of existing number of 1910. In favor of WASP's
-1924 National Origins Act: reduced to 2% in 1890
-1929 Im.Act: Number each year reduced to 150,000
What do the immigration polices tell us about the attitude of Americans to immigrants?
-They wanted white Americans for their jobs
-Disliked new political/religious ideas (Communism)
-Racial prejudice. Favoured WASPS and those who spole English
What impact did the KKK have on society?
-Thier actions were 'agreed' with. Fears of dirtying the' 'pure' white American culture
-Seen as enforcers of the Jim Crow laws
-By enforcing WASPS as dominant, they enforce idea that African-Americans are nothing but slaves
How did the lifestyles of the young change?
-Women became more liberated. Flappers, smoking, dancing, walking alone
-They had more freedom to do what they pleased, entertainemt wise
-Jazz sparked new dances frowned by older citizens
In what parts of the US did lifestyles stay largely the same?
-Cities. Busineses flourished yet still retained their prosperity
-Suburbia. Stayed the same wtih new tech
