Name the three types of Rib
True, false and floating
What are the three types of bones that assemble the ribcage?
sternum, 12 pairs of ribs and 12 thoracic vertebrae.
Sternum
Consists of three fused bones: manubrium, the body, xiphoid.
Body (gladiolus) of the sternum
The middle bone
Clavicular notch
A depression located on the lateral side of the superior
border of the manubrium; area where the clavicle attaches.
Costal notches
Costal notches - 7 small depressions (or facets) located
on the lateral edges of the sternum; areas where the ribs
attach to the sternum via their costal cartilages
Manubrium
Upper part of the sternum.
It articulates with the clavicles and the first two ribs.
(superior bone)
Xiphoid process
Lower part of the sternum (inferior bone)
Clavicle Notch
A depression located on the lateral side of the superior
border of the manubrium; area where the clavicle attaches.
Jugular notch
a concavity found between the two clavicular notches.
Sternal angle
A slight, anterior protrusion formed by the junction of the manubrium and the body.
True Ribs
Ribs 1-7) Attach to the sternum via the narrow band of costal (hyaline) artilage.

The flexible cartilage makes
the breathing process easier.
False Ribs
(ribs 8-10) Attach tot he costal cartillage of rib 7, not directly to the sternum.
Floating Ribs
(ribs 11-12) have no anterior attachment.
Angle
The area of shaft with the greatest curavture.
Body or shaft
the long, curved portion of the bone.
Costal groove
A narrow elongated depression that runs along the inferior surface of the bone; where the
costal blood vessels run.
Head
The medioposterior end of the bone; area of articulation with the facets and demifacets of the
thoracic vertebrae.
Superior articular facet
Small depression on the head; area of articulation witht he inferior costal
or demi facet on the vertebra above.
Inferior articular facet
Small depression on the head; area of articulation with the superior costal (demi-)
facet on the vertebra below.
Neck
Area between the head and tubercle.
Tubercle
A small elevation found posterior and lateral to the head; area of articulation with the transverse process of the vertebra.
Sternal end
The region of the rib that attaches to the costal cartilage.
