The Respiratory System
The respiratory system is a system that helps you breathe. When you inhale a half circular shaped muscle called a diaphragm moves down and give the lung more space. The lungs are organs that help the body exchange oxygen with carbon dioxide. |

Parts of the Respiratory System
When you breathe, air comes in through your nose or mouth. Hairs and a layer of mucus in the nose trap dust, germs, and other things that may be in the air. Mucus is a sticky, thick fluid. Many parts of the respiratory system are coated with mucus. The parts are the nasal cavities, the larynx, the trachea, the lungs, and the bronchi. |

Getting Oxygen to Cells
In your air sacs oxygen leaves and goes to your blood. Then carbon dioxide goes the other way and enters your lungs. Did you know when you hold your breathe carbon dioxide goes into your blood. Then it sends a message to the rib muscles to contract and then your chest expands and you inhale. There are several systems that give you the oxygen your cells need. |

Vocab
Respiratory System:is made up of the organs in your body that help you to breathe.Diaphragm:a dome-shaped, muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen in mammals. It plays a major role in breathing, as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax and so inflates the lungs.Lungs:a dome-shaped, muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen in mammals. It plays a major role in breathing, as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax and so inflates the lungs.Trachea:carries air into the lungs |
