Why is Machiavelli writing the book?

Job application to Medici’s.

How would you describe a prince?

One who leads and is committed to history, geography and WAR (only job of the prince is war)

Who were the great leaders of history to Machiavelli?

Moses, Cyrus, Theseus,Romulus

They all did it themselves. Virtue was their skill

-Cruelty and Love

One can be cruel but don’t be hated. EX: Agathocles the Sicilian. Hannibal= used cruelty to rule over mercenaries successfully.Love= hereditary rulers can rule by love. Skippio ruled by love but wasn’t fully respected. In war they loved him, in peace they didn’t respect him (spanish vacation).

-Hatred=

Confiscation of property & changing laws (raising taxes) = WILL MAKE YOU HATED

-Mercenaries / Auxiliaries=

Mercenaries= forces you buy. never loyal. Only loyal to money. Auxiliaries= forces you borrow from other powers. Only loyal to their own leader. EX: The Swiss

-Appearances=

Must give appearance that he is honorable, caring, in control, faithful. Not a god.

-Types of Principalities=

Hereditary Principalities- safest, easiest. From familyMixed Principalities- more difficult but can be easier when keep old laws and bring in loyal followers of the old regime. Not malcontents. Eccleastic- the Pope. has religion. Can do whatever because of it, can live lavish no one will question it.

-Prince has to satisfy=

Citizens Soldiers Nobles. Most only have 2 out of 3 except Rome.

-Colonies=

Likes colonies because cheap and easy to maintain. Only require you to be there. EX: Turkish Ottoman empire, Greeks, Roman.

-The French=

Very secure + stable country to be emulated. But in Italy, failed to set up colonies + understand it. Elevated weaker power, brought other people in, failed to go to war, tried to create new laws, didn’t live there. = CHAOS. Did everything wrong.

Louis’ = not very good at holding land and everything.

-Neutrality=

Does not like neutrality. One should never allow chaos to develop to avoid going to war. Eventually will go to war. Laziness will ruin a great prince. Neutrality is lazy.

-Francesco Sforza=

Duke of Milan. He is the BEST. Because he did everything by his own skill. France brought him in and he took all of it by his own skill.

-Cesare Borgia=

Duke Valentino. Came to power by fortune of his father Alexander the VI. Lost it by ill-fortune of his father’s debt. -> emergence of Julius II.

-Ferdinand of Spain=

Great work ethic, great reputation.

-Chiron the Centaur=

Half man half beast. Will teach how to be an animal and a man.

-Loyalty=

Not Loyal: Mercenaries, malcontents, factions, conspiracies, nobilityLoyal: Common people usually just don’t be hated.

-Flatterers=

Don’t trust. But may be annoying but must still listen to advisors. Must appear to be interested in what they have to say. Maximilian- German king listened to no one.

-Nothing is so unstable or unhealthy as the reputation that is not based on one’s own power.

worthless if not based on one’s skill

Sparta Rome Athens

-Sparta couldn’t rule Athens, didn’t let them be under their own rule. But Romans made colonies and offered citizenship.
