Sir Walter Raleigh
English explorer, solider, and write who was favored by Queen Elizabeth I. He was acused of treason by James I was imprisoned at the Tower of London. Raleigh founded a colony near Roamoke island which he called Vierginia in the year 1589.

This is important because he founded new lands in the Americas
Elizabeth I
Queen of England from 1558-1603, the fifth and last of the Tudor family. In 1588 when the Spanish Armada attempted attack her counter tactics protected her country.

Elizabeth was important because when she defeated the Spanish, England became the dominant country and would start colonizing overseas
Sir Francis Drake
English sea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, and politician of the Elizabethan Period. From 1577 to 1580 he circumnavigated the world. Elizabeth I knighted him in 1581 and he was second-in-command against the Spanish Armada

He is important because the Spanish had great control over the new world and he was high up in Spain
Phillip II of Spain
King of Spain who reigned from 1556-1598. Spain was at it's highest point and had the greatest worldly influence during his rule.

this is important because Spain had great control over the Americas
Joint - stock companies
Companies that were granted rights to establish plantations from the king. These companies were made up by a group of investors and stocks were bought and sold

This was important because it led to modern day corporations and it also led to investing in colonies
Jamestown
First permanent English settlement in the Americas in Virginia. Established on May 14, 1607 as “James Fort” by Virginia Company of London. It became permanent after abandonment in 1610 for a short while. Jamestown was the capital of the colony from 1616 until 1699

This is important because it was the first city in the Americas which was the start of a new civilization.
Charter of Virginia Company
The first charter of Virginia assigned land rights to colonists as a religious mission. It was signed by King James I of England on October 26, 1606.

this was important because it gave the colonists their own lands
Captain John Smith
English soldier, explorer, and author.Played an important role in the establishment and survival of Jamestown. He explored the rivers of Virginia and Chesapeake Bay. He gave the name New England to that area and encouraged people to migrate to the new world.

He was important because his explorations led to the expansion of the Americas
Powhatan
Virginia Indian Confederation of tribes, or also the leaders of those tribes. Approximately 14,000- 21,000 Powhatan people resided in eastern Virginia when the English settled in Jamestown in 1607

This is important because they were the original people who lived on the land before the English explorers
Pocahontas
A Virginia Indian and daughter of a Powhatan. She allegedly saved the life of an English captain named John Smith in 1607 when she placed her head upon his as her father was about to kill him. In 1613 she was captured by the English. When she was allowed to go back to her people she chose to stay with the English. During her captivity she converted to Christianity and changed her name to Rebecca, to become more like the English.. She married John Rolfe, the first interracial married in American history.

She is important because she was the first Native American to be viewed as a celebrity by the English and fit in so well among them.
Lord De La Warr
Englishman that went to Jamestown with 150 men on June 10, 1610. He fought against the Indians and was appointed governor-for-life of Virginia but left Sir Samuel Argall in charge as he returned to England. When he heard complaints about Argall he sailed back to Virginia but died at sea. The Americans named the state of Delaware after him.

He was important because he whelped the English win against the natives.
john Rolfe
An early settler of North America who had the first successful cultivation of tobacco as an export crop in the colony of Virginia. He was married to Pocahontas

He was important in helping American trade
The importance of 1619
The first Africans were brought to Virginia to be used as indentured servants. With the success of tobacco planting, African slavery was legalized in Virginia

The year 1619 was an important year because that was when slavery officially started
Lord Baltimore
Rewarded control of Maryland for his loyal services. He was a catholic and wanted Maryland to be rich for the Catholics

He was important because he controlled land in the Americas
James Oglethorpe
Founded Savannah, Georgia’s first settlement in 1733. He was governor of Georgia and had strict laws such as a ban on rum and slavery.

He was important because he had different laws than some other governors at the time
