What are the Greek elements?
water, wind, earth, fire
What did scientists try to do to the elements?
change them into more valuable ones (gold and silver) did not succeed, but found new properties and elements
What did Dmitry Mendeleyev do?
in 1869 he created the periodic table of elements in order of their atomic mass.
What happened to the periodic table?
Some of the later elements did not fit, so in 1913 an English scientist named Henry Moseley organized them by atomic number, which worked better. Today we organize them both ways.
What are families, groups, and periods?
Families, also called groups, are vertical rows on the periodic table(18). Periods are the horizontal rows(Hurry uP)(7)
Name the families in order.
1.alkaline metals
2.alkaline earth metals 3-12.transition metals 17.halogens 18.noble gasses |
What are the properties of nonmetals?
solids, liquids( only bromine), or gas, mainly non-shiny, they have a poor melting and boiling point(except graphite), and they have low conductivity
What are the properties of metals?
solids (except mercury), shiny, they have a generally high melting and boiling point, and they have good conductivity
Where are metals, metaloids, and non metals on the periodic table of elements?
Metaloids are the "staircase" area.Metals are to the right of the metaloids, and non metals are to the left.
How many elements are there?
over 100 ; over 92 are natural, rest are man made
What is a atomic #?
The atomic # is the # of protons in the atoms nucleus: this # is the same as the # of electrons and neutrons
What is the mass #?
The mass # is the # of protons and neutrons in the atoms nucleus
Name the # of electrons that can be on each energy level.
1 : 2 atoms
2 : 8 atoms 3 : 18 atoms 4 : 32 atoms 5 : 50 atoms 6 : 72 atoms |
