The Spartacist Rebellion - January 1919 |
The spartacists were Communists who wanted to copy what Communists had achieved in Russia in 1917. They tried to seize control, helped by some soldiers, sailors and factory workers. Their leaders, Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, were killed. |

Kapp Putsch - March 1920 |
Dr Wolfgang Kapp led a march in Berlin of 5000 Freikorps (Ex-Soldiers). They wanted to make Germany powerful again with something like the old dictatorial style of Government. The putsch (An attempt to seize power) was defeated by the workers who declared a general strike. |

Munich Putsch - November 1923 |
Adolf Hitler, leader of the small Nazi Party, had some support in Bavaria. At a meeting in a beer hall, Hitler announced that he and his supporters were going to seize power and marched towards the Government building. The putsch was quickly defeated. Hitler was arrested, put on trial and sentenced to five years in prison. While in prison he decided that in the future the Nazis should seek power by election and not by putsch. |
