Nervous system

System that regulates the body's responses to internal and external stimuli. Consists of the Central NS and Peripheral NS.

Neurons

Nerve cells that provide communication through the brain.

Parapalegic

Two limbs are paralyzed.

Quadrapalegic

4 limbs are paralyzed.

Stem cells

Can turn into any cell

Components of a neuron (1)

Cell body

Produces energy for the cell.

Components of a neuron (2) Dendrites

Receives impulses and conducts them to the cell body.

Components of a neuron (3) Axon

Carries messages away from the cell body.

Components of a neuron (4) Myelin

Insulates and protects the axon.

Synapse

The junction between the axon terminals of one neuron and the dendrites of another neuron.

Neurotransmitters

Chemical messenger that carries impulses across the synaptic gap across transmitters.

Action potential

Eleteicak charge that travels down its axon.

Reuptake

The sending neuron reabsorbs the excess neurotransmitters from the synapse.

Central NS

Brain and Spinal cord

Spinal cord

Column of nerves within the spine that transmits messages to and from the brain.

Peripheral NS

Communicates between the central nervous system and all parts of the body.

Somatic NS

Transmits senses to the central nervous system. (Temp and pressure)

Autonomic NS

Regulates the body's vital functions Ex. Heartbeats, breathing, digestion and blood pressure.

Sympathetic NS

Prepares body for action through "flight or fight" syndrome.

Stress

Parasympathetic NS

Slows organ and gland activity to conserve the body's energy and to refuel the body again.
