Central Nervous System (CNS) |
Consists of the brain and the spinal cord. It gathers information about, and responds to, changes in the environment. |
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) |
Consists of motor and sensory neurons which carry from the receptors to the CNS as well as impulses from the CNS to the effectors |
Sensory Neurones |
Carry impulses (messages) FROM receptors TO the CNS |
Motor Neurones |
Carry's impulses FROM the CNS TO the effector |
Effector |
Name given to a part of the body that brings around a response to a stimulus (e.g. muscle or gland) |
Receptors |
Specialised nerve cells which are adapted to respond to a stimulus (the eye for example has a group of specific receptors that respond to a stimuli, in this case, light) |
Relay Neurones |
Co-ordinate responses, they link everything else together |
Reflex |
A fast, pre-programmed response to a stimulus. They are automatic so that you don't need to think about it (they don't go to the brain, only to the spinal cord). They act to protect the body |
Synapse |
Where two neurons meet and the impulse is turned from electrical to chemical to allow the impulse to be picked up by the next neuron and carry on. The chemical the diffuses along the SYNAPTIC GAP is called a NEUROTRANSMITTER. |
Neurotransmitter |
The chemical messenger that diffuses between two neurons at a synapse and is picked up by the next neurone and carry's the impulse on |
What type of neuron is this? |
