FSH

Matures an egg and stimulates oestrogen production

Oestrogen

Builds up the uterus on day 4 and stimulates LH production

LH

Causes egg to be released on day 14

Corpus luteum

This is the remains of the egg. It produces progesterone.

Progesterone

Maintains uterus lining and slows FSH and LH production. When levels decrease, it breaks down and FSH increases.

Day 2-period starts

The uterus

Has a thick spongy layer of blood vessels. This blood supply allows the placenta to develop which supplies oxygen, glucose and nutrients to the baby whilst removing waste.

If the egg is fertilised

Progesterone levels stay high to maintain the uterus lining during pregnancy.

Negative feedback

FSH stimulates oestrogen production. Oestrogen then inhibits FSH production.
