leather boxes basically. It was tied on the arms where it could be seen. Sometimes it would be tied to their foreheads. The box contains bits of Scripture. These bits of Scripture could be the ones that they want to learn, they are determined to live by, or because it stepped on their toes.
Tithe
o A giving of a specific amount of money. They were required to give a tenth of their money.
o It wasn’t really a bad thing for them to do. But the law did not require that they be so hard about it.
o They tithed with mint, dill, and cumin but they neglected the matters of the law such as mercy, justice, and faithfulness.
• So the problem is that they could care less about anything else as long as you paid the 10%
Why did Jesus say to the pharisees that you clean outside the cum and plate but the inside is full of greed and self-indulgence?
o Uses this image to show what they do misses the point. They would have scrupulously clean everything inside and out (they didn’t want anything to get into them to defile them) so Jesus uses that metaphor for them. They are worried about cleaning the outside but they could care less about the inside.
In the woes to the pharisees Jesus says woe to them for decorating the monuments of the righteous etc Explain.
o They tried to say that if they had been around when their forefathers were persecuting the prophets then they would not have treated them good.
o But he is saying this is not true and that they will not change. They have already seen the death of John the Baptist and the apostles will not be treated well as we can see in Acts.
o You remember all the persecutions of the prophets in the past. All the same things are going to happen in your lifetime.
• 1 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. 2But he answered them, "You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down."

What could be the reason the disciples were pointing out the temple buildings?
• When they were saying this they were saying how great and maybe how permanent these buildings were.
• But Jesus tells that the area will be destroyed.
"Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?"
could have three different questions or it could have two questions or one big question.
• Jesus says let no one lead them astray-it was directly spoken to the disciples but this can apply to us.
• Probably every person who came to try to go against the Romans would have been coming saying that they were the Messiah.
• Is there any indication that he was talking to us? No he was saying this to the disciples. We need to process this through the ears of the disciples.
o In there times there were a lot of people who would have said something like this.
• Something great will come out of this even though it is difficult. Just like birth pains, it is difficult and painful yet something wonderful comes out of it.
What is apocalyptic?
• A type of literature that was prevalent a little before and after Jesus’ life. The best representation of apocalyptic literature is the book of Revelation.

• It arises in times of stress, difficulty, and times of trials.
• It talks a lot about destruction and torment and talks about a final outcome that is filled with hope.
What is the chief characteristic of apocalyptic literature?

no, In acts they tell the gospel to all the world and then the end will come is most likely referring to the end the temple and Jerusalem as they knew it. And also some of them would have seen this in their lifetimes.

• This is referring the destruction of the temple

• Would people be able to flee Judea and hide in the mountains from Christ? No, this must be referring to a destruction of Jerusalem not of the end of the world.

It was when the Jews were in Egypt and Moses had come to save them from slavery.

Why might the disciples have reacted the way they did when the woman poured the expensive ointment on Jesus' head?
• The disciples did not live a life filled with material things when following with Jesus. So they were appalled that she would waste anything. They didn’t want to waste anything. They thought that she should have sold it and given the money to the pour.
The ointment poured on Jesus head is seen as what?

when it says that he “reclined” what does that mean?
• In this time they had short couches that are around the table so when it says that he “reclined” at the table it means they literally reclined.
What is a covenant?
, a relationship that is initiated by God for the benefit of those who enter the contract. A relationship established between someone who is absolutely sovereign and someone who is absolutely dependent.
o This is what you need this is what I will do and this is what I expect from you.
The cup
o Every time you drink of this cup you need to think of the fact that I have created a covenant that you can be a part of.
o The covenant is a forgiveness of sins, which you cannot achieve.
All who take the sword will perish by sword. What does this mean?
If you take out the sword then you are most likely to die by the sword so this is not necessarily saying that there can be no war or that we have to be complete pacifists.

o There are two trials that take place. One before the Jews and one before the Romans
Why was Jesus' trial not held out properly?
It should not have happened without a 24-hour period where they mull over the punishment or sentence and then decide if it is right.
When does Jesus' trial take place?
Jesus was taken from the garden at night and the trial was held all through the night and the announcement of the sentence was announced at first light

Pilate because the Jews authority to give out punishment had been taken away by the Jews.
Why did Jesus not defend himself before Pilate?
because if he had defended himself he could have cleared the case. All these things needed to happen in order to fulfill the prophecy.
Why did Pilate think the Jews wanted to kill Jesus?
because they were Jealous of him. He took the crowds away from them.

Describe the nature of crucifixion as punishment
• Created or caused death by suffocation. They had to push themselves up in order to breath. But the pain of your body hanging on your wrists and when you release then your diaphragm would be crushed.
• This could last for days or this could last for less amount of time. It depends on the strength or the amount of pain they were in for the scourging.
Why did the Romans choose crucifixion as a punishment?
• The Romans wanted not just to provide a show but to provide an incentive to not rebel against the Roman Empire.

What reason could it be that when the woman anointed Jesus he said she was preparing him for burial?
o After Jesus died the women did not have the time to put the spices and the customary things they put with the body and maybe that is why Jesus talked about he significance of Mary pouring the ointment on him.

• The triumphal Entry
o When they were in Bethphage near Jerusalem Jesus told his disciples to go into the village and there they will see a donkey tied and a colt (young male horse) with her. He told them to just untie them and if anyone asks then tell them the Lord needs them and the people will send them.
o This fulfilled a prophecy
o The disciples did as they were told and brought them.
o The disciples put their cloaks on the donkey and Jesus sat upon it.
o Others put branches from the trees on the road.
• Jesus cleanses the Temple
o Jesus overturned the tables of money changers and rebuked those selling in the temple
o He healed the blind and lame in the temple
o Chief priests and scribes saw the “wonderful things that he did” and heard the children crying out Hosanna to the Son of David. They were indignant.
o Jesus left the city and stayed in Bethany
• Jesus curse the Fig Tree
o Jesus comes upon a fig tree that has no fruit and curses it and the tree withered and the disciples were amazed that the tree could wither all at once and asked Jesus about it.
o Jesus said that if they had faith and did not doubt then they could wither the fig tree and many other things, such as moving the mountain. Whatever they ask in prayer you will receive, if you have faith.
• The Authority of Jesus Challenged
o When Jesus entered the temple he was confronted by the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him and asked him by what authority was he doing the things he was doing. Jesus tells them he will answer their question if they first answer his question. He asks them what authority Johns baptism had. They knew if they answered that he was from heaven then Jesus would say why didn’t you believe him but if they said he was of man then the people would get angry because they thought he was a prophet. They said they didn’t know so Jesus did not answer them.
• The Parable of the Two Sons
o A man went to his first son and said go work in the vineyard today and the son said no but then changed his mind and went. The other said ok and then never went. Which one was the obedient one? The first. Jesus told them that the tax collectors and the prostitutes will enter the kingdom of heaven before them. Because they, when they heard the message of John the Baptist, believed him but they did not, even after they saw it.
• The Parable of the Tenants
o A man bought a vineyard and leased it out to tenants. He went out of town and when the time of the harvest came around he sent servants to collect the fruit. The tenants killed and stoned the servants this happened twice before the owner sent his son thinking they would respect him. They killed his son.
o Jesus concluded this by saying the owner (God) would put them to a terrible death and put new tenants in who would give him fruits in the season.
o So Jesus tells them (elders of the people and chief of priests and people in the Temple) that the kingdom will be taken away from them and given to people who are producing fruits.
o The chief priests and Pharisees heard this and knew that he was talking about them. They had been looking for a way to arrest him but were afraid of the crowds because they thought he was a prophet
• Paying Taxes to Caesar
o The Pharisees wanted to trap Jesus by entangling him in his words.
o They sent their disciples along with the Herodians
o They asked if it was right to pay tax to Caesar. Jesus said let me see the coin and there was the face of Caesar on it. He said give to Caesar what is due him and give to God what is due God.
• Sadducees Ask about the Resurrection
o The Sadducees came to Jesus asking him about resurrection even though they do not believe in the resurrection.
o They said Moses said that if man dies then his brother must marry the widow and raise up his children. So say there were seven brothers and one died the next took her and so on until she was the last one and then she died. So in the resurrection who whose wife will she be?
o Jesus says that in the resurrection we neither marry nor are given in marriage, we are like angels. Then he says that God is a God of the living not of the dead
• The Great Commandment
o After the Pharisees heard that Jesus silenced the Sadducees they came to test Jesus
o One asked which is the greatest commandment in the law? And Jesus said you will love your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. He said the second was you shall love your neighbor as yourself.
o On these two commandments depend all the Law of the Prophets.
• Whose Son is the Christ
o Jesus asked the Pharisees whose son is the Christ. They said the son of David. So how does David call his son Lord? If he is Lord then how is he his son? And no one was able to answer him. And after this no one dared asked him any more questions.
• Lament over Jerusalem
o Jerusalem is the city that kills prophets. God wanted to protect the people of Jerusalem like a mother hen but they would not let them. Their house will be left desolate and they will not see Jesus again they say ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’
• Signs of the close of the age
o Jesus was telling his disciples privately
o They asked when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and the close of the age?
o Jesus tells them not to let anyone lead them astray because many will come and say I am the Christ.
o When they hear rumors of wars and signs of wars they should not be alarmed the end is not yet.
o Nation will rise against nation; kingdom against kingdom, there will be earthquakes and famine in various places.
o then there will be tribulation and you will be put to death and hated for Jesus’ name sake.
o Then many will betray one another and hate one another.
o Many false prophets will raise
o Because of the lawlessness the love of many will grow cold
o But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
o Then the gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world and then the end will come
• The coming of the son of man
o After the tribulation of those days the sun will be dark stars will fall the moon will give no light. Then the sign of the son of man will appear in the heaven and all the world will mourn and see him coming riding on the clouds. He will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call. They will gather his elect
• The lesson of the fig tree
o When the branch of the fig tree becomes tender and puts out leaves you know summer is near. Like this by seeing these things you will know that the time is near. This generation will not pass without seeing all of these things.
• No one knows that day and hour
o No one knows when that day is except the Father. Like in the days of Noah and no one knew when the flood was coming no one will know when the son of man will come. Stay awake because we don’t know what day the Lord is coming.
• The final judgment
o Jesus will be in heaven on his throne and all the nations will be before him and he will separate them into two groups. The group on the right will be welcomed into heaven because they gave the son of man food, drink, clothes, visited him in prison etc. the righteous will say we didn’t see you like that or help you and Jesus says that if you helped any of your brothers that way then you helped Jesus.
o The group of the right will; be cursed for eternal fire. Because they did not help the least of the brothers and therefore did not help him.
• The plot to kill Jesus
o After Jesus told them these things he told them that on the day of Passover the Son of Man will be crucified.
o The chief priests and elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, Caiaphas, and plotted to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. They did not want to do it during the feast in case there was an uproar.
• Jesus anointed at Bethany
o Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper and a woman came with an alabaster flask and very expensive ointment and poured it over Jesus head. The disciples became indignant because it was so expensive and could have been sold and the money given to the poor. But Jesus said that she had done a beautiful thing to him. He said she was preparing him for burial. They will always have the poor with them but they will not always have Jesus
• Judas to betray Jesus
o Asked how much money he could get for betraying Jesus and they gave him 30 pieces of silver. And from then on he tried to find a moment to betray him.
• The Passover with the disciples
o The disciples ask Jesus where he wants them to prepare to eat the Passover. Jesus tells them to go to a certain man in the city and tell him the teacher says my time is at hand. And they went and prepared
o After they ate he was reclining and said one of you will betray me. And they all began to ask is it I Lord? And he said he who has dipped his hand into the dish with me will betray me. The son of man will have to be betrayed but woe to the man who does the betraying. It would have been better for him to not to be born. Judas asks if it is I and Jesus replied you have said so.
• Institution of the Lord’s Supper
o As they were eating Jesus took bread and blessed it and broke it saying this is my body. He took a cup and when he had given thanks he gave it to them saying it was his blood of the covenant. He tells them he will not drink the fruit of the vine until the day he drinks it with the father and us in the father’s kingdom.
• Betrayal and arrest of Jesus
o Judas comes with a crowd with swords and clubs he kisses Jesus giving the signal that this is the man they are to arrest. Jesus tells him do what you have come to do. They seized Jesus and one of the ones who was with Jesus struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his hear. But Jesus said to him put your sword back those who take the sword will perish. He could have a legion of angels if he jus asks for them but then the prophecy will not be fulfilled. All the disciples left him and fled.
• Before the Sanhedrin
o They took him to Caiaphas where the teachers of the law and the elders were assembled.
o Peter followed from afar and sat down to see the outcome
o The chief priests and the Sanhedrin were trying to find false evidence against Jesus but they could not find any.
o Until two came forward and said Jesus said “I am able to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days
o They asked him if this was so and he didn’t answer. Then the high priest said to him you are under oath and you tell us if you are the Christ
o Jesus replied yes it is as you say. And he told him that the Son of man will come riding on the clouds and the high priest became angry tore his clothes and asked everyone if they had enough evidence now. Everyone said yes and they spit in his face and hit him
• Peter disowns Jesus
o Peter was in the courtyard and a girl said you were with them. He answered I don’t know what you are talking about
o Then he went out to the gateway and a girl said you were with Jesus of Nazareth and peter gave an oath I do not know this man
o Then others said surely you were with him you have the same accent. He called curses down on himself and denied Jesus again. And immediately the rooster crowed. Then he remembered what Jesus said and wept bitterly.
• Judas hangs himself
o By morning they decided to have Jesus killed and took him to Pilate. Judas saw that Jesus was condemned and felt remorse went back to the people who gave him the money and said I have sinned and I have given you an innocent they said its not my problem and Judas threw the money in the temple and went and hanged himself.
o The chief priests knew they couldn’t put the money in the temple treasury so they bought the potter’s field so they could burry foreigners and they called it the Field of Blood. This fulfilled the Prophet Jeremiah
• Jesus before Pilate
o Pilate asks Jesus if he is the King of the Jews and Jesus says yes by saying you have said so. He would not answer the chief priests and the elders. After Pilate asks him have you not heard all these things they are saying against you? And still he did not say anything
o Jesus did not defend himself because if he had defended himself he could have cleared the case. All these things needed to happen in order to fulfill the prophecy.
o It was a custom of Pilate to release one prisoner at the Feast so he gave them the option to release Barnabas.
o Pilate’s wife tells him not to have anything to do with his death because she has had a dream about it.
o They let Barnabas go and wanted to crucify Jesus Pilate washed his hands in front of them and said I am clean of this man’s blood. And they said let his blood be on us and our children
• The soldiers mock Jesus
o Stripped him and put scarlet robs on him. Put a crown of thorns on his head a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and pretended to hail him the king of the Jews
o They struck him with the stick on the head over and over again and put his clothes back on and led him to be crucified.
• The crucifixion
o Forced Simon to carry the cross. Came to Golgotha offered him the wine mixed with gall they crucified him and divided up his clothes by casting lots. Over his head was written this is Jesus king of the Jews. There were two robbers on one the left and one on the right. The people were saying if you were going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days then save yourself. He saved others but he cant save himself! Robbers also mocked him.
• The Death of Jesus
o Jesus cries my God my God why have you forsaken me? The people thought he was calling Elijah. One man brought a sponge of vinegar and the others said no leave him alone and see if Elijah comes and saves him.
o Then Jesus cried out in a loud voice and died. At that moment the curtain of the temple tore in two, the earth shook and rocks split, the tombs broke open and the bodies of holy people were raised to life. They came out of the tombs and after Jesus’ resurrection they went and appeared to many people in the holy city. The Centurions were sue this was the son of God after all that.
o There were women who had followed who were going to care for the needs of Jesus. They were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and John, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
• The Burial of Jesus
o A rich man Joseph of Arimathea cam and wanted Jesus’ body buried in his own new tomb and wrapped his body in clean linen cloth he rolled a stone in front of the entrance.
