The Laurel Tree

Niemand wusste, wer ihn gepflanzt hatte.

Nobody knew who had planted it.

Seit Jahren reckte er seine Äste über jedermann,
der durch den Vorgarten kam.

For years it had been stretching its branches over each and
every person who came through the front yard.

Baumes gezählt.

When the house changed owners, the tree’s
days were numbered.

Der neue Herr fällte ihn kurzerhand, handhoch über dem Erdboden.

The new master chopped it down then and there, to a hand’s breadth
above the ground.

Baum ist mir im Weg“, sagte er.

“The tree’s in my way,” he said.

Das war im Herbst. Im Frühjahr darauf sprossen kleine,
frische Triebe aus dem Stumpf, die sich innerhalb eines Jahres zu einem kleinen Busch
entwickelten.

That was in the fall/autumn. In the
following spring, small, fresh shoots sprouted from the stump, shoots which within a year
developed into a small bush.

days of the new year did he venture carefully into the yard.

beachtliches Stück gewachsen.

Despite the
harsh winter the laurel bush had grown a substantial amount.

Er zeigte wohl einige gelbe, erfrorene Blätter, aber es schien,
als hätten die noch vorhandenen Säfte im Wurzelstrunk die Schösslinge doppelt widerständig
ausgestattet, denn ein hoher Strauch mit starken Zweigen grünte nun am Weg.

It did have,
admittedly, a few yellow, frozen leaves, but it seemed as if the sap still present in the
rootstock had made the shoots doubly resistant, for a tall shrub with strong branches
was now flourishing by the path.

sinnend vor dem Busch und sprach also vor sich hin:

The man, who was thankful to feel the sun and sensing a new feeling of strength, stood
thoughtfully in front of the bush and said to himself aloud:

„Es war wirklich eine Laune, dass ich
den Baum umschlug, während der langen Zeit meines Krankseins, als es nicht gut um mich
stand, musste ich daran denken, wie sehr man doch am Leben hängt.

“It really was a whim to cut down
the tree.
During the long period of my illness, when things were not looking good for me, I
was compelled to reflect on how much one actually clings to life.

fresh greenery sprouting from the roots - even though I had tried to put a halt to the new
growth by force.

Der Lorbeerstrauch hat mich vor allem eines gelehrt: sich
wehren, jeder Gewalt begegnen, zäh und verbissen ums Leben kämpfen, immer die Hoffnung
nähren.

laurel bush has taught me above all one thing: to put up a fight, to oppose all forms
of violence, to fight for life resolutely and untiringly, to always foster hope.

and – with a contented smile that covered his face – went back into the house.
