Imperfect vs. Preterit
Preterit:
stating what exactly happened at a specific moment

Imperfect:
describing what was happening at some unspecific time in the past

In More Depth:

Example on when to use imperfect and when to use the preterit
Anoche, yo bailaba con Juan cuando Allen llegó.
-->Last night, I was dancing with Juan, when Allen arrived

Notice imperfect is used to describe something thats happening in the story. Used preterit at the end due to the fact that two imperfects can't occur within the same sentence
