Explain how air is drawn into the lungs

When air is drawn into the lungs the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm contract to make more room in the lungs. This contraction lower the air pressure inside the lungs allowing the higher pressure air from outside to be drawn through the nose or mouth causing it to travel down the trachea and then enter the lungs where gas exchange can take place.

Why does the heart rate go up when a cigarette is smoked?

When you smoke a cigarette the oxygen that goes into your lungs in contaminated by all of the chemicals in the cigarette when these travel around the body it causes your veins and arteries to constrict making it much harder for your body to pump your blood around your system and get oxygen around the body

Why do we breathe out more carbon dioxide gas than we breathe in?

We breathe out more carbon dioxide gas than we breathe in because it’s a waste gas produced in respiration, this process provides energy for our body's chemical reactions.

Why is bile added to the duodenum in the digestion process?

Bile is added to the process because it is needed to emulsify fats, then the enzymes break them down to fatty acids and glycerol. The bile is also an alkaline so it helps reduce the acidity coming from the hydrochloric acid from the stomach.

Why does blood need to be filtered though the kidneys?

The blood needs to be passed through the kidneys so that it can be cleaned of wastes so that they don't poison the body. Excess protein is removed in the forms of urea, water and salt.

Why does the stomach has a PH level of 2-3?

It needs to have such a strong acidity of 2-3 because the enzyme pepsin which breaks down proteins need a highly acidic environment to function.

Why does the heart have it's blood vessels on the outside?

The heart has it's vessels on the outside because cardiac muscle, which the heart is made of needs needs a high supply of food and oxygen gas to functioning so it can relax and contract to pump blood all around the body.

Why are enzymes used in digestion?

Enzymes are used in digestion to break down large food molecules and pieces of food into their building blocks or smallest units so they can pass through the gut wall and into the blood.

Why do villi line the small intestine

Villi line the small intestine to increase he surface area of the small intestine so that more of the building blocks of food or smallest units can pass through at once.

Why are capillaries small and have thin walls?

Capillaries are small and have thin wall because they need to increase the surface area of the blood vessel so that it will be more efficient at transferring materials

Why does the pulmonary artery carry de-oxygenated blood unlike other arteries that carry oxygenated blood?

It carries de-oxygenated blood the blood that travels through it is traveling to the lungs to be oxygenated the other arteries are leaving the heart after coming newly-oxygenated from the lungs

Why is it not a good idea to eat too much salt?

Too much salt is bad for us because it increases blood pressure and therefore needs to be flushed out with a lot of water making us thirstier than usual. And increase blood pressure can increase the risk of stroke and heart disease.

Why does a smoker skin look much older compared to a non-smoker of the same age?

A smoker skin ages faster because the nicotine in the cigarette causes the blood vessels to constrict, this stops a lot of blood getting to the skin so it is unable to provide nutrients and oxygen to help the skin cells remain healthy

Why do the nasal passages produce mucus?

The nasal passages produce mucus because it helps trap and destroy and bacteria before it can get down to the lungs where they may cause infection instead they are swallowed.
