What are some greenhouse gases? |
Carbon Dioxide Methane Water Vapour |
what is the greenhouse effect? |
the greenhouse effect is when radiation from the sun passes though the atmosphere and heats the earths surface. the radiation is re-emitted as longer wavelength infrared radiation. |
what does the greenhouse effect enable? |
it maintains the earths surface and atmosphere at a suitable temperature |
What is the enhanced greenhouse effect a consequence of ? |
it is a consequence of the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the troposphere |
What does the enhanced mean in enhanced greenhouse effect? |
it means to adding to, so humans are adding to the natural greenhouse effect already operating |
Why have carbon dioxide levels risen? |
due to increased fossil fuel consumption and deforestation |
What has happened to the concentration of methane in the atmosphere? |
it is increasing due to farming (cows and sheep), natural gas fields, industry and garbage disposal. |
What does CFCs stand for ? |
Chlorofluorocarbons |
What are CFCs? |
they are efficient greenhouse gases, more efficient then CO2. |
where are CFCs used? |
they are using in refrigerators and in a variety of industrial appliances |
How is Nitrogen released into the atmosphere? |
by internal combustion engines and a s a result of fertiliser use |
What does an increased concentration of greenhouse gases do? |
it upsets the natural balance that maintains the temperature of the earths surface |
what does an increased concentration of greenhouse gases result in? |
it results in more radiation being retained in the atmosphere and the average surface temperature of the earth rising by small but significant amounts |
What are some consequences of the enhanced greenhouse effect? |
polar ice caps melting resulting in rising sea levels climate change changes in the natural ecology difficulties with food production |
Why is rain slightly acidic? |
because the water combines with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to form a very weak acid called carbonic acid with a pH of 6.2 |
What is the chemical equation for rain? |
H2O + CO2 > H2CO3 |
What is acid rain? |
it is polluted rain due to oxides of sulfur and nitrogen |
What pH does acid rain have? |
5.6 or less |
What causes acid rain? |
by industrial furnaces and burning coal that contains some sulfur and in the internal combustion engine of motor vehicles |
