It was a British ship carrying iron ore disguised as an ocean liner. Germany could tell it was holding something so they attacked it offshore of Ireland with their U-boats. They immediately apologize to the US & do the Sussex pledge where Germany promises not to take down ships without warning. Germany eventually breaks it in 1915 because of the decoy ships. |
