The First Fundamental Principle; Love is the ruling norm.

"The ruling norm of any Christian decision is love, nothing else."

Acts are good if they help people and bad if they harm, there are no other criteria. Love decides if something is bad or good.

Eg: Stealing is normally wrong, but stealing a pistol from someone intending to kill their wife isn't.

The Second Fundamental Principle; Love is the only intrinsic good.

"Only one thing is intrinsically good; namely, love: nothing else at all."

Jesus and St Paul replaced the Torah with love - even the 10 Commandments aren't absolute.

Eg: Bonhoeffer considered the commandment against killing absolute, but set that aside and attempted to kill Hitler.

The Third Fundamental Principle; Love is justice distributed.

"Love and justice are the same, for love is justice distributed, nothing else."

Justice is love at work in the community, it should involve working out the most lovong way to act for all humans in the group.

The Fourth Fundamental Principle; Love is selfless and for all, not just those you like.

"Love wills the good, regardless of feelings."

Love is an attitude not an emotion, agape desires the good of the other not oneself.

Eg: Soren Kierkegaard - love is non-preferential.

Eg: Bultman - Love based on affection is self love.

The Fifth Fundamental Principle; Love's end justifies the means.

"A loving end justifies the means."

Love justifies everything but must be the end that is sought, not merely a means to something else

Eg: Similar to utilitarianism, but substitutes happiness for love.

The Sixth Fundamental Principle; Love's decisions are situational.

"Love's decisions are made situationally, not prescriptively."

Decisions are made in the situation at hand, as the situation can throw up exceptions to any rules.

Eg: Grand Inquisitor wanted to do away with freedom as he recognised cannot cope with it. Situation Ethics states people can.

The First Working Principle; Pragmatism

The proposed action should be practical and work; it should work towards the end of love.

Eg: Mrs X

The Second Working Principle; Relativism

A situation can have exceptions, so words like never and always can't be used. The act should be relative to love above all else.

Eg: Jesus healed on the Sabbath.

The Third Working Principle; Positivism

Faith must be accepted on a voluntary basis, not through reason. One must make a positive choice to put love first, as there is no proof one should.

Eg: St Paul's Letters.

The Fourth Working Principle; Personalism

God is held as a personal person, so morality should be personal too. Christians must act on love and put people first over law.

Eg: Asylum Abortion Example.
