What is the Plot?

The Plot is what keeps the reader interested in the story, without Plot we would not be interested in reading the book in the first place. Even though the Plot is what keeps us interested in what we are reading it is not always the most important element of a good story.

What is the setting?

All stories have two different ntypes of settings: Physical and Chronological. The physical setting is where the story takes place. The "where" can be very general-a small farming community, for example-or very specific-a two story white frame house at 739 Hill Street in Scott City, Missouri. Likewise, the chronological setting, the "when," can be equally general or specific.

What are characters?

There are three ways to evaluate a character in a story: what the individual says, what the individual does, and what others say about him or her,


Flat Characterization

A character who has one or two sides, representing one or two traits-often a stereotype. Flat characters help move the plot along more quickly because the audience immediatly understands what the character is about.

Round Characterization

A character who is complex and has many sides or traits with unpredictable behavior and a fully developed personality. Antagonists are usually a round characterization.

Dynamic Characterization

A character who experiences an essential change in personality or attitude. Protagonist are almost always dynamic.

Static Characterization

A character who does not change or develop beyond the way in which she or he is first presented.

What is Conflict?

There are two possible types of conflict: External and Internal. EXTERNAL conflict could be man against nature or man against man. Internal Conflict might not be as exciting as external, remember that rwal life as far more internal than external conflict.

What is Symbol?
