The Nuclear Arms race and Space race

-1960-1980


-Propaganda of who's science, technology and culture was more developed.


-The Neil Armstrong on the moon in 1969 was only to prove the American scientific and technical superiority


-Americans stopped sending missions to the moon in 1972

Consequences of The Nuclear Arms race and Space race

If either side launched its missiles, they had a radar warning and would instantly release their own missile, and both sides would suffer huge damage


The Americans called this Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD)


Both side needed nuclear missiles to put of the other side from using their missiles (Nuclear deterrent)



U2 Crisis

1960


-In 1956, Einsenhower allowed the US air force to begin using planes to spy on the USSR.


-Soviet missiles had improved, and in May 1960 a U2 spy plane, piloted by Gary Powers, who was arrested after parachuting to safety


-The USSR then accused the USA of spying, where they denied it, however they then later admitted it, but Eisenhower refused to apologies for it.

Consequences of the U2 Crisis

The France summit meeting was then spoilt


It was a propaganda victory for the USSR as the USA looked so bad.


The Test Ban Treaty could no longer be signed.


There was a deep mistrust still left in the air when the Cuban Missile crisis came up.

Détente

The relations of the two super powers.


-The USA left Vietnam in the early 1970's, where it became communist


-There were anti nuclear movements in the west that supported détente


- The USA and USSR were worried about arms costs of the arms race


- SALT 1- Nuclear arms limitation treaty, and talk of SALT 2


Helsinki conference, august 1975 - 35 countries signed an agreement making conflict in Europe less likely. Capitalist countries accept that the communist countries in Eastern Europe are communist, and that the USSR will give these countries basic human rights.

consequences of Détente

Positives: SALT 1 proved that the USA and the USSR could make agreements with each other. SALT 1 was not perfect but it did lead to more talks through the 1970s


The meetings and visits between the USA and the USSR did make realtions better and showed that the two sides could have friendly relations.


wereNegatives: There wer still areas of the world where the superpowers were trying to increase their influence and where there was tensions. For example trying to up each other by trying to win support in Africa and the Middle East.

Hungarian Uprising
After the second world war, The USSR put a communist government in Hungary with the leader Ramose. When Stalin died in 1953, Khrushchev became the new leader of Russia, and attacked Stalin's policies, and in 1956 made the new leader of Hungaria Nagy.
