What was the 'Bubonic Plague'?

A type of plague which resulted in people having painful swelling (bubeos) grown in their armpits and groin and would get a high fever and headache.


Would also become unconcious and die a few days later in dreadful agony. Caused by spreading from flees.

What was the 'Preunomic Plague'

A type of plague which attacked people's lungs. People with this would cough up blood and die very soon.

How was the 'Prenumoic Plague' spread?

By people breathing or coughing germs on to one another. People in the Middle Ages didn't realise this.

Why did some people think the plague was caused by the body's humours being out of balance?

Galen says in his book of fevers that the body does not become sick unless it clearly contains evil humours.

Why did some people think the plague was God's punishment?

It was an idea that God often allowed plagues, conflict, wars, etc to terrify and torment men and drive out their sins.

Effect of the planets

A general cause was thought to be the close position of the 3 planets Saturn, Jupiter and Mars.

Blocked digestive system

Some people thought the particular cause of disease in each person was the state of the body, bad digestion, weakness and blockage.

Invisible spirits in the air

Some believed that plague was caused by an airy spirit leaving the eye of a sick man and striking the eye of a healthy bystander looking at him.
