They put out trading posts and got very invovled with the slave trade.
What did the Portuguese do with the slaves form Africa?
They brought them to sugar plantations in the Carribean area.
How did Portugal become so wealthy with its slaves?
They sold some of them in a market to people in Portugal. The rest they shipped to the Carribean islands to work for sugar plantations. The sugar went to people in Europe and the money from that went to shipping more slaves to the Carribean islands.

Around 1 million slaves.

Most of them died of bad conditions or until they died from working so hard.
