List some of the hormones released by the adrenal cortex

-Glucocorticoids e.g. cortisol

-Mineralocorticoids e.g aldosterone

-Sex hormones e.g testosterone

What hormones are released from the adrenal medulla?

-adrenaline and noradrenaline

What controls the adrenal cortex?

-Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is released from the anterior pituitary gland to control the release of hormones from the adrenal cortex

What is the function of the Glucocorticoids?

-They promote the conversion of protein and lipids into carbohydrates

Which conditions see a rise in cortisol levels?

-Obesity

-schizophrenia

-Osteoporosis

-Diabetes

-Anorexia

-cardiovasular disease

-Cancer

-Aids

-chronic fatigue

-Depression

-Anxiety

What is cushings syndrome?

-It is the signs and symptoms associated with prolonged exposure to inappropriately high levels of the hormone cortisol

What does the Mnemonic CHUSHINGOID stand for?

-Cataracts

-Ulcers

-Skin (stria, thinning, bruising)

-Hypertension/ Hirsutism/hyperglycemia

-Infections

-necrosis

-Glycosuria

-Osteroporosis

-Immunosupression

-Diabetes

What are the clinical presentations of someone with cushings disease?

-fat pads

-Moon face

-Red cheeks

-Bruisability with ecchymossis

-Think Skin

-Striae

-Pendulous abdomen

-Poor muscle development

-Poor wound healing

What two types of cushings disease are there?

-Exogenous normal by drug treatment with gluccorticoids

-Endogenous Cushings can be either pituitary dependent (80% of cases) or adrenal based (20% of cases)

What are the clinical causes of endogenous cushings disease?

-pituitary adenomas

-Ectopoic acth Syndrome

-Adrenal tumors

How can the Low dose dexamethasone Suppression test be used to diagnose someone with Cushings disease?

-Dexmeth is a syntehcic glucocorticoid which acts at GCC receptor on the hypothalamus and pituitary to inhibit the secretion of CRH and ACTH, leading to a fall in the plasma cortisol level in healthy people.

-There is only a slight drop in plasma cortisol levels in those with cushings disease
