Do you feel that you are a safe driver behind the wheel?

Or do you add to the problems on the roads today by texting while driving a vehicle?

Today I'm going to give you some information about the laws of texting while driving and hopefully you will look at this epidemic differently than you had before.
I was shocked when I had you all take the survey and found that 63% of the class texts while driving.
What is distracted driving?
There are three main types of distractions (according to the(NHTSA) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)

1)Visual-taking your eyes off the road.

2) Manual-taking your hands off the wheel

3)Cognitive-taking your mind off of what your doing.
What are the current laws in Nebraska for texting and driving?

What does secondary mean?
(According to Nebraska's DMV website) Right now, the only law that stands is that texting is banned for all drivers, HOWEVER it is a secondary law (which took place 7/10)

Secondary means that they have to stop you for another offense (a primary offense, such as speeding, DUI). Such as the seatbelt law Nebraska has.
What is texting while driving equivelant to?
Using a cell phone while driving delays a driver's reaction time as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. (according to the University of Utah)
Did you know that the first question they ask when your in a motor vehicle accident is was anyone on their cell phone?
People can be ticketed and fined if they are found to be on their cell phone while in an accident, and insurance companies are putting people as high risk drivers if you are ticketed for texting or being on your cell phone at all while driving.
So my quesiton to all of you is..was it really important for you to answer that text.
Or will creating an accident and possibly killing someone, let alone you finally give you that wake up call.
