What is tetracycline?
type of antibiotic - 60 years old
works on gram positive and gram negative
e.g doxycycline
minocycline
why is it not used in pregnancy 2nd or 3rd timester or under 18 year olds?
side effect - intrinsic tooth staining if present at time of mineralisation or calcification
teeth of fetus are developing 2nd and 3rd trimester and perm teeth enamel completion continues till age 16 on 8s
how does it cause stain?
binds to calcium ions (calcium orthophosphate) in the teeth.
what colour is the stain?
prior to eruption= fluorescent yellow
upon eruption = tetracycline will oxidise causing change to a non-fluorescent brown-grey (over a period of months or years)
what factors influence the stain?
1. stage of tooth mineralisation or calcification and degree of activity of the mineralisation process.
2. dose of tetracycline (staining has been seen in all doses over 3g
3. duration of tx
