Do we use tests a lot?
Yes, intelligence tests have increased in use.
Watkins et al., How many psychologists use tests?
90%
Top 9 tests used by psychologists =

Instrument rating among psychologists.
1.) MMPI, 2.) Figure drawings (Buck - projective test), 3.) Rorschach, 4.) TAT, 5.) WAIS - R, 6.) Sentance Completion Methods, 7.) WISC - R, 8.) Millon inventories (personality disorders), 9.) CAT

5/9 are projective
Meehl - clinical vs. statistical prediction
Statistical means are more accurate than clinical.
(special populations) Developmental scales/Tests

Birth - 2.5 years
Gessel - 1st developmental test. Examined 4 areas: motor, adaptive abilities(progressive), language skills, and social behaviors(adapting to social situations).

Data gathering methods: Observation of childs behavior, asking for info from parents (creates parental bias).
Bayley's scale
also looked at 4 areas, replaces Gessel's test because it was better. examined a mental scale, motor scale, and a developmental index.

mean = 100, SD = 15 allowed it to easily be compared to IQ scores.
Vineland social maturity scale.
Developed to counter problems in measuring mental retardation.

poor standardization - most of the data was collected by parents.

poor definitions of social behavior.

was revised quickly because their were other better tests.
In general, projective tests are
not very good.
Frank (1939) Projective Hypothesis
Kinder hates this article, talked shit about projective tests.

Projective = expressive or (unstructured = Kinder's term)
Murrey
Thematic appreception test(TAT)
Examined:
Needs - the most important needs are psychological.
Presses - environmental factors that help/hinder us in meeting our needs.
Themas -

The TAT is generally not scored the way Murrey intended. Results are generally eyeballed.
CAT - Children's Appreception Test
Belak & Belak - cards had animals on them. Measured stages that kids have to go through according to Freud.

Worse than useless according to Kinder.

CAT & TAT had face validity but it didnt really accomplish much.
SAT - Senior Appreception Test
GAT - Gorentological AT
Old people tests, neither worked well.

The cards had a large pull for negative affect in elderly people.
Sentence completion tests
Rotter developed the best of these tests.
better norms and scoring as well as decent validity and reliability.

The problem = no one ever scored it.
Human drawing tests (Buck H-T-P)
are less than adequate
RORSCHACH
based on a European game called "blotto".

ink blots

very widely used.

low % of agreement
Exner comprehensive system
combined the 5 major rorschach systems.

compiled 1000's of studies, kept only the studies with the best methodology.
Exner was reasonably successful in predicting
suicide using the rorschach
Contam

Red flags
grass bear and bloody island
Meyer et al. (2001) PAWG - Psychological assessment work group
Did meta-analysis = effect size, .00 - .02 = small or nonexistant, .20 - .40 or .45 = moderate, .45 - .50 = large.
RPRS
Rorschach prognosis rating scale
Bender-gestalt
test for kids, motor-visual skills

Asks you to copy pictures on to a blank piece of paper.
Leiter
deaf people etc.
