central tendency

statistics that are located near the center of a set of scores

coefficient of variation

a standardized measure of dispersion of a probability distribution or frequency distribution

descriptive statistics

mathematics used to organize, summarize, and describe data

interquartile range

a measure of variability based on dividing a data set into quartiles. Quartiles divide a rank-ordered data set into four equal parts.

mean

a calculated central value of a set of numbers

median

the number at the midpoint of a set of numbers when the set is ordered from greatest to smallest

measurement

the act of assessing

mode

the number that occurs most often in a set of numbers

normal curve

a bell-shaped curse showing a particular distribution of probability over the values of a random variable

percentile

the percentage of observations occurring at or below a given score

percentile rank (PR)

the percentage of scores that fall at or below a given score

range

a measure of variability obtained by subtracting the lowest score from the highest score

raw score

original data that has not been transformed

standard deviation

a linear measure of variability that takes into account every score in the distribution; the square root of the variance

standard scores

a set of scores that have the same mean and standard deviation so they can be compared

statistics

the practice of collecting and analyzing numerical data in large quantities

t score

t=[x-u]/[s/sqrt(n)] where x is the sample mean, u is the population mean, s is the standard deviation of the sample, and n is the sample size

variable

a symbol for a number we don't know yet

variability

the spread, or dispersion, of scores in a set of data, the result of the fact that not all scores are exactly the same

variance (s^2)

a measure of variability; a measure of the spread of a set of scores based on the average squared deviation of each score from the mean

z-score

a statistical measurement of a score's relationship to the mean in a group of scores. A z-score of 0 means the score is the same as the mean
