Compression Ratio

Ratio of the total volume of cylinder at bottom dead center to the total volume of cylinder at top dead center

r=V1/V2

Mean Effective Pressure

Theoretical constant pressure needed to act on the piston to produce the same net work as produced at the cylinder

Dead State

When the system is in equilibrium with the environment giving exergy equal to zero

Back Work Ratio

The ratio of the work input to the work output

bwr=Wc/Wt

Exergy

The maximum theoretical work that can be done by a system as it interacts with the environment at equilibrium, ex=0 (dead state)

Regenerator

Allows air exiting the compressor to be preheated before entering the combustor, reducing the amount of fuel needed to burn
