Llevar

to take (from A to B)

Llevar means to carry, bring or take something from point A to point B, whereas tomar just means to take something (or even to drink something).


Example:


Mi primo me llevó al aeropuerto.


My cousin took me to the airport.

Tomar

(1) to take


(2) to drink

Tomar is one of the most common verbs in Spanish, but it is used in a number of different ways.


For example:


(1) it can be used to discuss public transport (tomar el bus - to take the bus)


(2) taking a drink (tomar agua - to drink water)


(3) or even to take into account (tomar en cuenta).


Seguir

(1) to continue


(2) to follow

Examples:


Seguimos con esta conversación después de almorzar.


We’ll continue this conversation after lunch.¿Seguiste las instrucciones?

Pedir

(1) to ask


(2) to order

Examples:


¿Qué vas a pedir para comer?


What are you going to order to eat?

Example:

Juntar

(1) to get together


(2) to join

Example:


Nos juntamos el viernes para charlar y tomar un café.


We got together on Friday to chat and have a coffee.

Unir

(1) to join


(2) to unite

Unir means to join or connect two or more things together.


Examples:


El metro une el pueblo con la cuidad.


The metro joins the village to the city.


OR


Me he unido a un grupo de conversación español.


I’ve joined a Spanish conversation group.

Enviar

To send

Example:


Así se puede enviar mensajes de WhatsApp automáticamente.


In this way, messages can be sent by WhatsApp automatically.

Mandar

(1) to send


(2) to force to go


(3) to mandate

Example:


WhatsApp te permitirá mandar mensajes de audio.


WhatsApp permits you to send audio messages.

Quejarse

to complain

Example:


Él siempre se queja contra el gobierno.


He’s always complaining about the government.

Surgir

(1) to come up


(2) to arise or appear

Example:


Perdón, no puedo venir hoy porque algo muy urgente surgió.


I’m sorry, I can’t come today because something very urgent came up.

Apurarse

to hurry

Example:


Se apuró para llegar al cine a tiempo.


He/She hurried to make it to the cinema on time.

Funcionar

to work as in to function

Example:


Mi computadora no funciona bien hoy.


My computer is not working well today.

Tirar

In sports, a tiro is a shot on goal.


Examples:

Example:

Disfrutar

to enjoy

Example:


Disfruté la cena anoche.


I enjoyed the meal last night.

PASAR

How were your holidays?

Quedarse

I stayed in Cordoba for two nights.

Dejar

(1) to leave (to put)


(2) to let (to allow)

Example:


Dejé las llaves en la mesa.


I left the keys on the table.

Salir

Example:


Nos gusta salir en los fines de semana.


We like to go out on the weekends.

to choose

Example:


Me encantó la película que elegiste.


I loved the movie you chose.

Utilizar

to use or to utilise

Example:


Ella siempre utiliza google para buscar las cosas.


She always uses google to search for things.

Gastar

to spend

Example:


No gasto mucho en transporte público.


I don’t spend much on public transport.

Enchufar

to plug in

Example:


¿Puedo enchufar mi laptop aquí?


Can I plug in my laptop here?

Prender

(1) to turn on


(2) to light

Example:


Cuando llego a mi trabajo, prendo mi computadora.


When I arrive at work, I turn on my computer.


Prendí la luz para poder leer mejor.


I turned on the light so I could read better.

Apagar

to turn off

Example:


Voy a apagar la televisión y leer un rato.


I’m going to turn off the TV and read for a while.

Acostarse

to go to bed

Example:


Me voy a acostar ahora porque tengo mucho sueño.


I’m going to go to bed now because I’m very sleepy.

despertarse

to wake up/get up

Example:


Esta bien despertarse en la mañana.
