Sulfonamide: Sulfamethoxazole/ Trimethoprim

Indication: UTI, RTI


Ad. Effects: N/V/D, photosensitivity, crystalluria, rash, fever


Imp: dec. birth control effectiveness, take on empty stomach, avoid direct sunlight, hydrate, causes unusual results in tests, complete full treatment

Penicillins: Penicillin G

Indication: pneumonia, sepsis, strep.


Ad. Effects: N/V/D, anorexia, allergic reaction, rash, pruritus, superinfection


Route: IM


Imp: can take probiotics, don't take w/ juice or caffeine, dec. birth control effectiveness, take w/ food, complete full treatment


*epinephrine can help w/ allergic reaction

Cephalosporins: Ceftriaxone

Indication: meningitis, RTI, STD


Ad. Effects: N/V/D, anorexia, allergic reaction, rash, pruritus, superinfection


Imp: alters glucose in urine, take w/ food, complete full treatment, no alcohol for 72 hrs.


*if allergic to penicillin, may be allergic to Cephalosporins too

Macrolides: Azithromycin

Indication: RTI, STD, lyme disease


Ad. Effects: N/V/D, anorexia, superinfection, hearing loss, rash


Imp: throw away liquid after 10 days, cant be on warfarin or digoxin, take extended release form on empty stomach, any other form w/ or w/ out food, no aluminum or magnesium, no juice, dec. BC effectiveness

Tetracycline: Doxycycline

Indication: rocky Mtn. spotted fever, lyme disease, H pylori infection, syphilis, chlamydia, acne


Ad. Effects: N/V/D, anorexia, allergic reaction, photosensitivity, superinfection, discoloration in teeth, retard fetal skeleton development


Imp: don't take if pregnant or < 8 y.o., take w/ 8oz. of H2O, no juice, avoid direct sunlight, no supplements, start 1-2 days before exposure & 4 weeks after, take w/ food, hydrate

Aminoglycosides: Gentamicin

Indication: decontaminating GI prior to surgery, serious gram negative infection


Imp: blood, urine, hearing, kidney, & nerve tests, hydrate, take w/ food, avoid direct sunlight, yogurt, & probiotics, report ringing in ears

Quinolones: Ciprofloxacin

Indication: RTI, UTI, anthrax, bone & joint infections


Ad. Effects: tendon rupture, tendinitis, superinfection, photosensitivity, N/V/D, anorexia


Imp: don't take if < 18 y.o. or pregnant or breastfeeding, no dairy, iron or juice, take w/ 8oz. H2O & w/ or w/out food, avoid direct sunlight, no supplements

Metronidazole

Indication: c. diff., intraabdominal & gynecological infections


Ad. Effects: N/V/D, anorexia


Imp: frequent blood & liver tests, causes unusual test results, take on empty stomach, no alcohol, hydrate

Vancomycin

Indication: c. diff., MRSA


Ad. Effects: Red Man syndrome, ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity


Imp: frequent tests for long term treatment, assess renal function, has ceiling effect, hydrate

Antiviral: Acyclovir

Indication: herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus


Ad. Effects: burning when applied, N/D


Imp: start ASAP, clean & dry lesions, let tablet dissolve completely, hydrate, take w/ meals

Antiviral: Oseltamivir

Indication: influenza A & B virus, prophylaxis & treatment(reduction of duration of flu)


Ad. Effects: N/V


Imp: start w/in 2 days of onset, not a cure, take w/ H2O and food, can break and mix in sweet food, hydrate

Antiviral: Ribavirin

Indication: respiratory syncytial virus


Ad. Effects: rash, dry mouth


Imp: not effective if used alone, dec. # of RBC, liver, thyroid, & liver tests, dental exams, respirations, sputum, report pale or yellow skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion, angina, SOB, weakness, hydrate, pregnant cant handle, take w/ food

Antiviral: Ganciclovir

Indication: cytomegalovirus retinitis


Ad. Effects: bone marrow suppression


Imp: blood tests, eye exams, cbc's, use latex gloves and goggles for handling, take w/ water and food, can effect B.C. after 30 days, avoid exposure to eyes, mucus membranes, and skin

Antiviral protease inhibitor: Indinavir

Indication: HIV


Ad. Effects: kidney stones, abdominal pain


Imp: CBC's, usually w/ another drug, test Ca and vit. D levels, liver function tests, take on empty stomach w/ water, hydrate, no high fat foods

Antiviral NRTI: Zidovudine

Indication: HIV


Ad. Effects: bone marrow suppression, pancreatitis, rash


Imp: usually w/ another drug, dec. CBC counts, dec. infection fighting ability & clotting, w/ or w/out food, watch weight, no alcohol, remain upright for 30 mins. after taking

Antitubercular: Isoniazid

Indication: prophylaxis & treatment of TB


Ad. Effects: peripheral neuritis, hepatotoxicity, hyperglycemia(treat w/ B6 pyridoxine)


Imp: liver function test, CBC, BUN, uric acid levels, take on empty stomach, no alcohol, report gout, dark urine, dec. BC effectiveness

Antitubercular: Rifampin

Indication: TB


Ad. Effects: orange urine, saliva, tears, and sweat, hepatitis


Imp: watch contacts for discoloration, frequent CBC's, take w/ H2O, no alcohol, photosensitivity, multiple meds. to treat

Antifungal: Amphotericin B

Indication: severe systemic fungal infections


Ad. Effects: cardiac dysrhythmias, fever/ chills, malaise, nausea, headache, neurotoxicity, renal toxicity


Imp: frequent CBC's, cardiac monitoring, I&O, BUN, creatinine levels, may need antipyretic, antihistamine, antiemetic, or corticosteroid pretreatment

Antifungal: Nystatin
Indication: candida

Ad. Effects: local irritation, rash


Imp: can take other drugs, clean & dry skin, don't cover, avoid tight clothes, oral dissolve slowly in mouth, shake suspension and hold in mouth and spit out
